I bought a refurbished Acer Chromebook Plus 514 that was advertised with a 256GB SSD. In the Chromebook's storage settings, I'm seeing about 458MB in use and only 7.6GB available, which makes it look like the device has roughly 8GB of storage instead of 256GB. I may be confusing storage with RAM, since the diagnostics screen also shows a 16GB figure. What's the correct way to check the installed storage, and could the SSD have been replaced with a smaller drive during refurbishment?

Some storage screens show only one volume or partition, so look for an option such as advanced storage information or other drives. However, ChromeOS itself normally shouldn’t be using almost an entire 256GB drive invisibly. If the total disk capacity—not just free space—is around 8GB, take screenshots and compare the Chromebook’s exact model number with Acer’s specifications before contacting the seller.
Check the Chromebook’s Files app and look at the available space for the Downloads or local storage area. You can also open Settings and search for storage details, or check the device diagnostics page for the disk capacity. The drive should be listed as roughly 256GB, usually with a somewhat smaller usable capacity. If every screen reports about 8GB total, the listing was likely incorrect or the storage was replaced.
The 8GB or 16GB figure is probably RAM, not storage. RAM is the temporary working memory used by the Chromebook, while the advertised 256GB refers to the internal SSD. A 256GB drive will show slightly less usable space after formatting and the operating system, but it should still be nowhere near only 8GB total.
That makes sense for the diagnostics number, but the storage page still appears to show only about 8GB, so I’m going to verify the drive itself.
