Feeling Overwhelmed at Work – Need Some Advice!

I'm really feeling overwhelmed right now with my job at a medium-sized MSP/MSSP where I've worked for two years. I've gone from being the only Sysadmin to running the whole department, but now I manage a team of five (sys admins and security analysts), and honestly, it feels like I'm in over my head. The owner constantly changes direction on technical tools and micromanages everything. Most of my team lacks the necessary experience, and with all the technical work still on my plate, I barely have time to coach them.

Plus, the documentation is a mess, existing mostly in my head due to past tech debt, and I'm working 60+ hour weeks to catch up. I feel burnt out and am considering leaving, but I'm worried about my lack of formal education and certifications. Even though I have 7 years of experience, I've only been able to apply for other MSP roles without success. I could really use some encouragement or honest feedback on what steps to take next.

Burnout is real, and you shouldn’t feel guilty about wanting to leave. Focus on taking care of yourself, apply for new roles, and look into furthering your certifications. That can help open more doors for you in the job market. You've got this!

Honestly, I've seen this situation play out a lot in MSPs. Owners can be focused on profits over people, and you shouldn't have to shoulder all that stress. Do what you can at your current job, but if it's too much, consider looking for positions that allow for a proper work-life balance. Your mental health is more important than sticking it out in a toxic environment.

I totally agree. You should prioritize your well-being. If the company isn’t willing to support its employees, maybe it's time to move on.

It's true, MSPs can be a tough gig. Just remember, if it all falls apart, it's not on you as long as you do your best!

Wow, 60k is low for a manager! You definitely deserve more for handling so much. With your level of responsibility and expertise, it sounds like you could get a way better offer elsewhere. A lot of entry-level roles are already paying more than that! If I were you, I'd start updating my resume and applying for other jobs. Don’t settle for being underpaid when you have so much to offer!

CareerClimber89 -

Exactly! I’ve seen tier 1 roles paying more than that. Given your experience, you should easily be aiming for at least 75k to start somewhere else.

For real! Just update your resume and start applying. You can definitely find a job that pays you what you deserve.
