I've lost my iPhone at school about four hours ago and I've checked everywhere but can't find it. Unfortunately, I don't have access to my phone number anymore and I don't remember my Apple ID password, just the email associated with it. I've initiated the Apple ID account recovery process, but they say it will take a few days to get back to me.
My main concerns are whether someone could access my data, reset my phone, or otherwise manipulate it while I'm waiting for recovery. Can anyone actually get into my phone without my Apple ID and passcode? And does the Activation Lock fully protect my device while I wait? I'm feeling pretty anxious about this situation and would really appreciate any insights or similar experiences.

Don't worry! As long as your passcode isn't something super simple, nobody can get into your phone. Just focus on recovering your Apple ID, and make sure to lock it down once you have access back. You're doing the right thing!
If they don't know your passcode, your data is safe. iPhones are quite secure when they have a strong passcode. They can attempt to reset it, but they would need your Apple ID password to set it up again afterward.
Honestly, if you don't remember your credentials, it's very unlikely a random person will access your phone, especially since it's an iPhone. They're pretty secure!

That's so true! It’s crazy how many people don't back up their data or remember their passwords. It's like having a supercomputer in your pocket without knowing how to use it!
