Help! My Laptop Keeps Showing a Black Screen with a Password Prompt

I'm having a persistent issue with my older ASUS ExpertBook laptop that runs Windows. Whenever I open it, I sometimes see a message saying "checking media presence" before it goes to a black screen asking for a password. The password isn't mine, and I just want to know why this happens so frequently and how I can stop it. Restarting seems to work most of the time, but it's really frustrating. Any insights would be helpful!

Did you manage to share a picture of the screen? It helps to see what you're experiencing to better diagnose the issue. Sometimes visuals can reveal more than we think!

Thanks for sharing the photo! It definitely looks like something that needs attention. If you've already had it looked at and it happened again, there could be deeper issues either with the software or the hardware they need to address.

It sounds like your laptop might be having some trouble detecting its storage drive, which could be failing or perhaps even disconnecting. This issue usually occurs when the hard drive or SSD is on its last legs. If this is a school laptop, it's a good idea to take it in for repair before it gives out completely.

I get you're on a break right now, but if it happened before and they fixed it only for it to come back, it might be something they overlooked. It could be related to the connection or the drive itself failing. Keep an eye on it, and maybe check if they did a patch or something that could be causing this.
