How can I back up my iPhone 12 when I’m running out of storage?

I'm looking for advice on backing up my iPhone 12 before a major software update from iOS 15.1.1 to the latest version. I've had some bad experiences with updates in the past, resulting in the loss of my important photos and memories, which is why I want to ensure everything is safely backed up this time. My iPhone has a capacity of 128GB, but I'm down to just 2.98GB of available space. I have a lot of important items like Live Photos that I'd really hate to lose, but my MacBook Pro is also too full to handle an iTunes backup. I've thought about using Time Machine with a 256GB SanDisk USB stick, but I'm unsure if that would work for everything, especially the Live Photos. I'm trying to clean out unneeded files for memory, but I could really use some solid advice on the best backup strategy here. Thanks a ton!

Honestly, it sounds like you've let your storage get a bit overwhelming. Have you considered using iCloud for backup? It’s a reliable option, especially for all those precious photos and videos. If you decide to go that route, you might want to upgrade your iCloud storage plan to ensure you can fit everything you need. How much storage are you thinking of paying for?

So are you suggesting iCloud is the best way? I'm open to buying more storage if needed.
