How Can I Build Real Coding Confidence While Using AI?

I'm a developer who learned programming after the AI boom, and I'm trying to figure out how to build genuine confidence in my skills while using AI responsibly. I don't rely on vibe-coding for my projectsโI write the code myself and use AI mainly when I'm unsure how to approach a problem.
For example, I recently wanted to add a user-search feature that queried accounts from a database. I asked AI to explain the general approach step by step, asked follow-up questions about how the concepts applied to my project, and then wrote the implementation myself using the explanation and generic examples as guidance. I understood what I was building and got the feature working, but I still wondered whether simply understanding the solution is enough.
Before AI, I would probably have spent more time reading documentation, searching for examples, and working through discussions before finding an answer. That process may have exposed me to more knowledge. Now that AI can help me get unstuck quickly, I sometimes worry that I would not have become a developer without it, or that I have not really proven I can solve problems independently.
How can I develop authentic confidence in my coding abilities while still treating AI as a useful tool?

Reading and understanding code is often harderโand more importantโthan producing it. Donโt just check whether AIโs code works. Look for subtle bugs, poor architecture, security issues, performance problems, and assumptions that do not fit your project. Those judgment skills are a major part of professional development.

A useful exercise is to ask AI for an explanation, close it, and then implement the idea from memory. If you need to check syntax or a detail, that is fine, but try to reproduce the core solution yourself before looking again. Understanding may get you through one feature; recalling and adapting the idea later is what builds lasting confidence.

You should understand the solution well enough at the architectural level to recognize when it is wrong or incomplete. For a user-search feature, that includes thinking about whether the query is efficient, whether it returns the right fields, how it handles large datasets, and whether caching, indexing, validation, or security need to be considered. Writing every line yourself is less important than being able to evaluate the design and make sound decisions.

The basic process has not changed as much as it seems. Developers have always searched documentation, read examples, and learned from other peopleโs explanations. AI mainly makes that discovery faster. Use the speed to learn more, but donโt let it replace your judgment or curiosity.

Confidence comes from solving useful problems effectively, not from avoiding every tool. Think about whether you can understand a requirement, choose a reasonable approach, verify the result, and fix problems when they appear. AI can help with that process, but the responsibility for the outcome is still yours.
