How Can I Get a Refund for an App Subscription When Apple and the Developer Blame Each Other?

I bought a StepBet subscription through Apple's App Store, but I changed my mind within about an hour. StepBet advertises a seven-day refund policy and initially instructed me to contact them by email. After I did that, they sent me to Apple's refund process. Apple denied my request twice and later indicated that StepBet had declined the refund. When I contacted StepBet again, they directed me back to Apple. I made the request promptly and followed the stated instructions, but both sides keep referring me to the other. StepBet's terms do not clearly explain whether its refund policy differs for subscriptions purchased through the App Store. What practical steps can I take to cancel the subscription, pursue the refund, or escalate the issue without risking my Apple account?

A bank chargeback may be an option if the developer refuses to follow its written policy, but it should be treated as a last resort. Disputing an Apple-related charge can potentially lead to restrictions or even loss of access to the Apple account, so it is safer to exhaust the developerโs escalation process first.

The developer is generally the party responsible for deciding whether to honor its own refund policy, even when the subscription was purchased through the App Store. Keep the communication factual and ask for the matter to be escalated to a supervisor or billing department. Save screenshots, receipts, the policy wording, and the full conversation in case you need to pursue a formal complaint or small-claims case against the developer.

First, make sure automatic renewal is canceled so you are not charged again. Contact StepBet in writing with the account email, purchase date, amount, and a clear request to cancel and refund the charge under its seven-day policy. Include Appleโs denial or explanation so there is a record that you tried both routes. Based on the terms, StepBet appears to require cancellation directly with its support team, even though Apple processed the payment.
MellowOrbit42: That is what makes this so frustratingโthe payment went through Apple, but neither side will clearly explain who made the final refund decision.

NorthstarMica8: I would avoid a chargeback unless you fully understand the consequences. It may recover the money, but the possible Apple account problems could be more trouble than the subscription charge is worth.
