I forgot my Apple ID password, and my main iPhone was logged out. I'm now unable to sign in on three or four other iPhones, so they're effectively inactive. What's the safest way to recover the account and regain access to those devices?

Account recovery can be frustratingly slow. In some cases Apple temporarily reviews the account after too many incorrect attempts, and services like Messages or Apple TV may sign out while the review is in progress. Once you regain access, set up a recovery contact so it’s easier to restore the account next time.
Start with Apple’s official account recovery page at https://iforgot.apple.com. Follow the prompts to reset the password or begin account recovery. If Apple places the account under a security review, the process can take up to 72 hours or longer, so avoid repeatedly guessing the password because that may extend the lockout.

I’ll make sure to add a recovery contact once I’m back in. Thanks for the suggestion.
