How can I recover my notes after my hard drive crashed?

I recently had a hard drive failure and I'm pretty sure my notes were saved on my iCloud account. After installing a new hard drive and logging into iCloud, I don't see any of my notes. I also looked for them locally, since they might have been saved there too, but I couldn't find them. I understand they should be in Library/Containers or Group Containers, but I searched my backups without any luck. I'm using macOS Monterey 12.7.6. Has anyone experienced this before? What could have happened to my notes, and how can I retrieve them? Oh, and I found the Library folder, but I can't open it despite having the right permissions.

If you can't see them on iCloud, then they're likely not backed up there. It's a bummer, but it really highlights how crucial it is to have a secure backup system in place before things go wrong!

CuriousChipmunk42: That makes sense. Any idea why I canโ€™t find them locally?

Have you checked iCloud.com to see if your notes are visible there? Also, you might want to try data recovery software on your old drive; thereโ€™s a chance you could retrieve your notes if they're still stored on it!

LifeIsLemonz: Good point! It's worth a try.
