I've discovered that a relative, whom I'm no longer in contact with, has created an Apple ID using my Yahoo email to send messages via iMessage. I've already changed the password for my email account. However, when I attempt to reset the Apple ID associated with my email, it requests a verification code sent to their phone number, which I obviously don't have access to. I need help to get my email dissociated from their Apple ID account. This person is pretending to be me while messaging others, and I want to stop that from happening.

Have you tried contacting Apple Support directly? They should be able to verify your identity and help you remove your email from that account since you're the actual owner. Just explain the situation clearly to them. Keeping your email secure is the most important thing here.
You should definitely reach out to Apple Support. They have procedures in place for situations like yours, and they might ask you some questions to verify your identity. It's worth it to ensure that no one can misuse your email any longer.
