I'm setting up Microsoft 365 for a new client whose business name is fairly long. Because the full name was used for the organization, synced SharePoint folders appear locally under a path like "Always Be Cooking Services Ltd\library\etc". I'd prefer to shorten the organization name to something like "ABC Ltd" to reduce Windows file path lengths. The old organization settings no longer show the option, and the name in the billing area is read-only with a note saying Microsoft must be contacted. Where should this name be changed, and are there any consequences for existing SharePoint or OneDrive syncs?

Check the billing and legal-entity details before making the change. Some organizations have run into billing or support issues when the Entra display name no longer matches the legal business name. If changing it is too risky, shorten the document library name and reduce unnecessary folder nesting instead; that can improve path lengths without changing the tenant organization name.
The setting has moved to the Microsoft Entra admin center. Go to Entra ID, open Overview, select Properties, change the Name field, and save. That updates the organization display name.
Changing the name won’t automatically rename paths that are already synced on users’ computers. Existing OneDrive or SharePoint connections generally need to be unlinked and then linked again, otherwise the old long folder name may remain. Test the process on one machine before rolling it out widely.

What’s the recommended approach if we don’t want to rename the organization or disrupt everyone’s existing syncs?
