How can I speed up my old computer running Linux?

Hey everyone! I've recently made the switch to Linux, but I'm noticing that my 12-year-old computer feels even slower than it did on Windows. The integrated GPU doesn't support Vulkan and has issues with OpenGL, only really working well with DirectX 10. I'm struggling to even open Word files, which used to be really quick on Windows. Is there any way I can enhance performance on OpenGL, especially since I don't have a dedicated graphics card?

Older software tends to be more lightweight and might run better. If your previous Windows was an older version, it could have been more compatible with your ancient hardware. Newer Linux versions can be resource-intensive. Consider trying an older version of Linux, like a 2013 Ubuntu, though keep in mind it has security drawbacks since it won’t get updates. On a side note, disk encryption can slow things down too, especially on older drives. If you're using it, try a reinstall without it.

Thanks for the tip! I’ll check if disk encryption is on and consider trying an older version of Linux to see if that helps.

You might want to provide more details about your hardware setup, like the motherboard and the specific programs you’re using to open files and play media. Also, which Linux distribution are you currently using?
