I recently reset my late 2013 MacBook Pro Retina and it's currently running Mavericks. According to the documentation, it should be compatible with macOS 11 (Big Sur). However, I read somewhere that I might need to update to El Capitan first. The system tells me that everything is up to date, and the App Store only shows macOS Ventura, which I know isn't compatible. Is there a way to get the update for Big Sur? Do I need to connect to Ethernet via a dock, or will Wi-Fi work fine for update detection? Am I just being too impatient? Is it possible that the update could show up tomorrow? Also, does my Apple account need to be signed in rather than just using a local account?

You can actually install macOS Big Sur directly without having to update to El Capitan first. As long as you don't run into any issues with security certificates, you should be good to go. Here's a link to download Big Sur directly: https://apps.apple.com/us/app/macos-big-sur/id1526878132?mt=12
What happens if I do face issues with certificates? A lot of Apple websites aren't loading for me. Also, I found the update link in the App Store, but when I click 'Get', it asks me to sign in. I keep getting this error about logging in too many times with a bad password, and it deactivates my sign-in option. It’s frustrating because my devices are getting notifications to allow the login, which means it's working!
