How can I upgrade fragmented cloud architectures in a large organization?

I'm tasked with creating a cohesive cloud strategy across various business units and regional teams, but it's a daunting challenge. Our organization is dealing with legacy systems, technical debt, and differing architectures everywhere. There's pressure to cut down on cloud expenses while also boosting reliability, compliance, and operational efficiency. However, getting engineering, security, and finance teams on the same page is an ongoing struggle. I'm curious to know how others handle validated and risk-reducing architectural patterns at scale. Are there effective strategies or frameworks to modernize legacy systems gradually while ensuring compliance and preventing outages?

Have you thought about Infrastructure as Code (IaC) using the Cloud Development Kit (CDK)? I started making that transition, and I really think it could help address some of the challenges you're facing.

Getting everyone on the same page about the big networking and compute patterns is crucial. Once you've done that, just grind through the migration processโit takes effort, but it's worth it.

Youโre going to want to establish a framework and a Cloud Center of Excellence. Get everyone trained on that framework, and then start implementing with the low-hanging fruit.

Before modernizing any part of your cloud setup, consider holding cross-team workshops. It may take a bit longer to get started, but it keeps everyone aligned and helps avoid outages.

One key thing is to avoid creating a central deployment target. Instead, focus on developing packages, practices, and patterns that empower teams to operate efficiently without bottlenecks. Centralization often leads to resistance and can complicate matters for companies already in a tough spot.
