I’m learning Python and also want to study things like data structures and algorithms. Do you keep practicing Python separately, or focus on one subject at a time? I’m worried I’ll forget what I’ve already learned.
How do you keep one programming language fresh while learning something else?
Answers
You don’t have to keep every detail in your head. Use Python for your data structures and algorithms practice, and the two subjects reinforce each other. If you switch to another language later, a little project or a few exercises can bring the syntax back.

Build small things rather than repeatedly starting a course over. A script that cleans a CSV, a simple tracker, or a little data visualization gives you a reason to use the language and make decisions yourself. Looking up syntax is normal. The useful skill is getting comfortable finding what you need and getting unstuck.

Short, regular sessions are easier to maintain than occasional marathons. Even 20 minutes spent writing code and recalling what you learned can help. If you miss a few days, don’t restart from the beginning. Pick up where you left off, and review only what the next task calls for.

Some forgetting is expected. You’re not aiming to memorize every function or piece of syntax. Keep a few notes or examples for things you often forget, and practice recognizing the problem and looking up the relevant details. Refamiliarizing yourself quickly is part of learning to program.

If you have limited time, it’s fine to focus on one main goal for a while. You can study algorithms in Python and let that be your language practice, rather than adding a separate daily Python routine. If you stop using Python completely, expect a little rust, but basic familiarity often returns with some hands-on work.

So I don’t need to split my study time into separate language and DSA sessions?

Would you recommend a project alongside studying, or wait until I know more?
