What helped you get past the Kubebuilder basics?

I’m learning to build custom Kubernetes controllers for a work project and have been reading the Kubebuilder book. What else is useful, especially for understanding real-world pitfalls and design choices?

Read existing operators with a specific question in mind. Large projects can be overwhelming, so trace one reconciliation path and look at how it handles retries, status updates, cleanup, and changes to dependent resources. Comparing a couple of operators can show that there isn’t always one universal pattern.

For practical guidance, look for write-ups about controller pitfalls and failure modes, not just step-by-step tutorials. Reconciliation can happen repeatedly, so pay attention to idempotency, error handling, ownership, and what happens when resources change or disappear. Those details tend to matter once a controller is running for real.

Build a small controller and let the questions come from the code. Start with one custom resource and one simple action, then test what happens when you update it, delete it, or make an operation fail. The docs make more sense when you have a concrete behavior to investigate.

That makes sense. I’m hoping to avoid learning only the happy path, so I’ll make failure and deletion cases part of the first version.

If you’re using Go, examples focused on client-go can help fill in the lower-level API concepts that a framework may hide. A preconfigured development cluster is also handy, since you can spend your time experimenting with watches and API behavior instead of getting stuck setting up the environment.
