I've had an app idea for a long time, but when I finally tried to build it, I realized I didn't know where to begin with backend development. What concepts, tools, tutorials, or practice projects would you recommend for someone starting from scratch?

Choose a specific goal before choosing courses. Build a small version of the app you want, then learn each concept as it becomes necessary. Beginner programming courses from platforms such as Coursera, Khan Academy, or Udemy can help with the fundamentals, but regular hands-on practice is what makes the pieces connect.

Start with a small project instead of trying to build the full app immediately. A simple to-do API is a good exercise: create routes, store records in a database, and handle common errors. Debugging those real problems usually teaches more than watching tutorials alone.

Backend covers a lot of ground, including programming, APIs, databases, authentication, security, deployment, and middleware. Pick one practical stack and focus on it firstโ€”for example, Node.js with Express and PostgreSQL, or another combination that fits your goals. You can always learn additional tools later.

A backend learning roadmap can help you see the bigger picture, but donโ€™t treat it as a checklist you must finish before coding. Learn the basics, make a working API, add a database, then gradually study validation, authentication, testing, and deployment as your project grows.

MellowPine47: That makes sense. I was trying to understand everything before starting, so Iโ€™ll build a much smaller version first and learn the missing parts along the way.
