I'm looking to swap out my WiFi card since it doesn't support Linux, and I'm kinda worried about static electricity damaging my laptop. I don't have an antistatic bracelet, but someone mentioned that touching the metal part of a USB port could help equalize potential. Is that enough to keep my laptop safe from static discharge while I do the swap? I might be overthinking this, but I'd rather be safe than sorry. Any tips on how to avoid static issues while changing the card?

If you're really paranoid about static, you could buy a cheap antistatic strap. They're not expensive, and it could give you some peace of mind while doing the swap.
Just touch the metal shell of the USB port to ground yourself, and try to only touch the edges of the new WiFi card. Avoid touching the surface areas if you can. If you need to move around while working, just touch the USB port again. Easy peasy!
You'll be just fine! I’ve been working on computers for decades and have never used an antistatic strap. Just make sure your laptop is off while doing the swap, and touching that USB port should help equalize everything. Go ahead and make the change without too much worry!
That's a relief! I appreciate the reassurance.
I find it funny that you're worried about static and you're using Linux! But seriously, you really don't have to stress over it. Just make sure to power off the laptop and replace the card—it's straightforward. If you're still worried, just touch any metal part of the laptop to discharge any potential buildup. You'll be good to go!
Haha, yeah, I guess I do sound a bit anxious. Better safe than sorry right?
Honestly, you don’t even need to overthink it. Just don’t rub a balloon on your head or something, and you’ll be good. Most of the time, as long as you’re not in a super dry environment with pets, you won’t have any issues!
You could also leave your laptop plugged in while the power is off, and that will keep it grounded. Just make sure not to do the swap on a carpet or anywhere where static might build up. You'll be fine!
Thanks for the tip, I’ll keep that in mind!
