Is 4 sticks of DDR5 RAM really worse than 2 for my new PC?

I'm building a new PC and debating between getting 32GB of DDR5 RAM now and adding more later or going for 64GB right away. Should I go with 2x16GB or 2x32GB RAM sticks? My motherboard is an Asus ROG STRIX Z690-E, and I just want to know if having four sticks will affect performance compared to just two.

Your PC will primarily utilize dual channel memory first before using the 3rd and 4th sticks. Standard consumer CPUs are optimized for dual channel configurations, while quad channels are typically found in server CPUs or high-end ones like Threadrippers.

Ah, I see. Thanks for explaining!

Many users report issues when using four sticks compared to just two. Personally, I always stick with two sticks for better stability.

Yes, it can be worse. Consumer motherboards generally use a daisy chain topology which is designed for optimal signal quality when only one stick is used per channel. When you add a second stick to each channel, it might not run at high speeds as effectively.

Is that true for DDR4 as well as DDR5?
