Is it worth switching to Rubrik for Azure backup solutions?

Hey everyone! We're currently utilizing Azure's built-in backup solution for our VMs and SQL backups with LRS storage. We also use Azure Site Recovery to replicate to another region, and our Azure Vaults are set to be immutable. I'm exploring the idea of using a third-party backup solution like Rubrik. While I think Rubrik looks promising, I'm unsure whether it offers any real advantages over Azure's native options, aside from transferring backups to their platform. We're planning to keep Azure Site Recovery as well. One concern is that Rubrik is pricier than Azure, and I'm assuming we'll incur higher egress costs since Rubrik doesn't charge for it, but Microsoft probably will. Are there any notable benefits of using Rubrik over our current Azure backup setup? Thanks!

Before deciding on switching to a third-party SaaS like Rubrik, ask yourself these questions: What problems are you facing with Azure's native backup solutions? And what does Rubrik offer that you truly need? If Azure’s tools are doing the job without any issues, it might not be worth the switch. Make sure to consider migration costs as well as operational expenses.

I’ve worked in this area and can tell you that unless there's a strong reason to switch to a third-party solution, Azure's backup and Site Recovery should be sufficient. Typically, you might consider a third-party tool if you manage on-prem environments and need a unified backup solution. Otherwise, if Azure's tools are functioning as expected, sticking with them is usually a good plan.

While I haven't used Rubrik before, I think it's important to look at your reasons for considering a switch. If Azure’s backup tools are working fine, you might not need to change. Just keep in mind any potential risks like tenant compromise, but with immutable vaults, your backups should be safe. Also, if you're using standard Azure backups, check on how your current setup protects against deletion or compromise.
