I'm considering an upgrade from my current Intel i5 9400F to an i7 9700. Here are my system specs: CPU: i5 9400F, Mobo: H310M S.2, RAM: 16 GB, GPU: RX 6600, and PSU: 650 watts. I have a decent cooler that keeps my 9400F around 50-60°C under max load. My main question is whether I should go ahead with the upgrade using my existing motherboard or if there are potential issues I might face in the future.

Honestly, I'd steer clear of upgrading to the 9700 since it’s quite outdated at this point. If you're looking for better performance, switching to an AM4 setup and getting something like a Ryzen 5600 could be a better option, although it might stretch your budget.

I totally get that! But going for a new platform like AM4 can get expensive; I hear you on the budget crunch.
