Hey everyone! I'm gearing up to build a new PC with the following components:
- CPU: 9800X3D
- GPU: Sapphire Pure 9070XT
- Motherboard: Gigabyte Aorus B650E Elite X AX ICE
- RAM: 32 GB (exact kit TBD)
- PSU: CM V850 Gold V2 80+ Gold Certified
- AIO: Lian Li Galahad II Trinity
I'm a bit concerned because I've heard about a lot of issues with the 9800X3D, especially regarding failures. Specifically, I have a few questions:
1. I know most of the failures have happened with ASRock motherboards. Has anyone here had issues with the Gigabyte board I'm planning to use?
2. If I'm not overclocking or undervolting the CPU, will that reduce the risk of failure? Does overclocking really impact the reliability of the 9800X3D?
3. If you wouldn't go for the 9800X3D, what CPU would you recommend at this time?
I've been waiting nearly five years to finally put this build together and I'm eager to get started. However, I want to make sure I'm making the right choices, especially with all the hardware concerns out there. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Most of the reported CPU damages are happening on ASRock boards. While the 9800X3D has had its issues, it's mainly because it's been such a popular chip. Other CPUs have had failure reports too, so the problem isn't isolated.
MSI motherboards are also a solid choice if you want to play it safe. They'll work fine with your setup!
A lot of the failures seem tied to voltage spikes on those ASRock boards, which have been a known issue. But with your Gigabyte board, you should be fine. Just make sure to stay updated on BIOS fixes. Enjoy your build!
Definitely! Keeping everything updated can make a huge difference.
Thanks for the reassurance! I’ll keep an eye out for those BIOS updates.
