Is My Laptop Overheating Due to a Virus or Just Aging?

My laptop has been acting up lately. It randomly overheats throughout the day, even when I'm not running heavy applications, which causes the whole system to lag and eventually crash. When I check the task manager, it shows everything is normal, but it crashes too. After these episodes, things return to normal, but sometimes my laptop completely shuts down or goes to a black screen, probably from overheating. Additionally, my wifi performance has dropped, making online gaming almost impossible. Could this be a virus issue, or is my laptop just getting old?

It sounds like your laptop is definitely having some issues! First things first, overheating can be caused by dust buildup or even failing hardware. Have you had a chance to clean out the fans? If they're obstructed with dust, that could be causing the overheating. Another thing to check is whether your laptop’s fans are actually working properly. If they're spinning fine, consider reapplying thermal paste to the CPU, as this can help with heat dissipation. But if you’re unable to do that yourself, maybe you can find someone who can help?

I've cleaned the fans, but I’m not sure how to apply thermal paste. Plus, my parents think the laptop is totally fine, so they're not keen on any repairs.
