Is My Old Laptop Suitable for Linux, or Should I Upgrade My RAM First?

I'm considering switching my old laptop from Windows 10 to Linux because it's super slow. The specs are an Intel i3 2nd gen processor, 2 GB of RAM, and Intel HD graphics 3000. I'm planning to use it for my brother to learn basic coding and need a user-friendly interface. Will my laptop handle the switch to Linux? Are there any precautions I should take before changing operating systems? Will I see any performance improvements, like faster file openings or browser loading times? Oh, and while I know boosting the RAM is recommended, I'm using this machine for experiments since I have another laptop for my regular studies.

You might also want to try running a live CD of different distros! It lets you test them out before committing. It's a fun way to find what works for your laptop without any permanent changes. Just back up your data first!
