Looking for Feedback on Our Managed PostgreSQL Service at Ubicloud

Hey everyone! I'm reaching out from Ubicloud because we've just launched our fully managed PostgreSQL service powered by Hetzner. We're really keen to hear your thoughts on how we can enhance this service to fit better into your workflows. Currently, we offer some cool features: full superuser access, automatic backups with point-in-time recovery, high availability, metrics and monitoring integration, and our pricing is much lower than typical hyperscaler options (3-5x cheaper!). Plus, we've got read replicas available!

We've created this because we know how challenging it can be to manage PostgreSQL on budget-friendly platforms like Hetzner. To help us build a service that truly meets your needs, I'd love your feedback on a few things:

1. What PostgreSQL extensions or features do you absolutely need?
2. Which integration points (like CI/CD or monitoring tools) are most crucial for your setup?
3. Are there any specific challenges you're facing with your current database system that we should address?
4. What factors would lead you to switch from a self-managed database to a managed service?
5. Do you have any performance concerns when using Hetzner for PostgreSQL?

Thanks for taking the time to share your insights!

Honestly, just getting rid of ads on platforms like Reddit would be a great start for feedback requests like this! But if you're upfront and genuine about seeking input, it can totally work.

I appreciate that! I really am just here to gather honest feedback as we're a startup. Your insights are super valuable!

I think it's fine too, as long as they’re clear about where they’re coming from. It’s great that you identified yourself as part of Ubicloud!

For me, if there’s no Infrastructure as Code (IaC), then it’s a no-go. That’s crucial for managing infrastructure effectively!

Great point! We actually support CLI, SDKs, and Terraform. I know there’s a bit of a gap in documentation for those, but we have nice CLI docs!

Does your service support KMS or HSM integration? That's something I'm definitely interested in for security reasons.

Currently, we have ABAC and encryption for data at rest and in transit, but we haven’t integrated KMS or HSM yet. What do you typically use for KMS?

I use PostgreSQL on Hetzner at a small scale, and I’ve found that using CNPG with K3S has worked really well! However, major upgrades can be a bit of a hassle, like moving from version 16 to 17. So, something to consider there.
For disaster recovery, do you use a specific object store for your backups?

That’s helpful info! We're still figuring out the best practices for backups, so your input means a lot! Thanks!
