I'm a 24-year-old woman who doesn't have much tech knowledge beyond basic computer tasks and a few games like The Sims 4, Cities: Skylines, and Minecraft. My old MacBook Air is falling apart, and I'm in need of a new laptop. My boyfriend is getting me one for Christmas, but I'm not sure which models to suggest. I'm looking for something that can run those games without being too noisy, is lighter for easy transport, suitable for schoolwork when I return next year, and costs less than $1000. Any recommendations?

You should check out the HP OmniBook 5 with a Snapdragon processor. It’s a sweet little system with incredible battery life. Just make sure it’s the Snapdragon version!
If you're aiming to stay under $1000, consider the Alienware 16 Aurora for about $999. It has solid specs for gaming, even if I'm not a huge fan of Alienware since Dell took over. Alternatively, if you're open to spending a bit more, the Lenovo Legion 5i 16 is a great choice at around $1199. Lenovo has a good reputation and better customer service than Dell, and the upgrade in specs is worth the extra cash.
For a solid choice, the Acer Nitro V 16S is a fantastic option. It has an AMD Ryzen 7 processor, NVIDIA GeForce RTX 5060, and comes with 32GB RAM and a 1TB SSD. It's designed for gaming but also practical for school.
Consider buying a used business laptop like the HP ProBook G9. It’s more powerful than you'd think and usually much cheaper. If you prefer something new, take a look at Framework laptops; they’re really high quality and easy to upgrade later.
Hit up Costco for some great deals right now. Almost any laptop made in the last 5 years with a decent GPU and 16GB RAM should run your games well. Look for Nvidia GPUs in the 4000 series range for better performance without breaking the bank. A 16-inch screen keeps it manageable for transportation too.

Definitely check for sales! The regular sales around the holidays can score you some good deals on laptops.
