Should I Ask for a Salary Adjustment Due to New Office RTO Policy?

I started at my company early last year, and my contract mentioned working in the office just 2 days a week at a different location. Those days were pretty flexible—mostly just if I needed to collaborate with someone. Now, with a new office opening up, the requirement is shifting to 3 mandatory days in the office. While I'm not thrilled about this change, especially since about half the company works remotely, it's not the end of the world for me. Since we have performance reviews coming up next month before the new office opens, do you think it's reasonable to request an additional $5,000 salary adjustment to account for the new return-to-office policy? I currently make $115,000, which is fairly decent in my area, especially with stock options and solid benefits.

If your role is pretty essential, like IT support, then it’s worth asking! Make a solid case for why the adjustment makes sense and remind them that your work is key, especially when it comes to managing the new office setup.

Absolutely, I’m one of only two IT folks here and we definitely need cross-training. That might strengthen my case!

It’s totally okay to bring this up, but you might have to prepare for some eye rolls from management. Often, they expect everyone to comply with the new in-office rules, and your chances of getting that extra $5k could be slim unless you’re a key player in the company. Just be ready for that possibility.

Yeah, and keep in mind that sometimes they look at profits and contributions. If you play a crucial role in the team, that might give you a better shot at negotiating.
