I'm building a PC from scratch and a friend is selling a used RTX 3070 Ti with three fans for around $300. I was considering picking it up, but then I realized I might be able to get a 3080 for just $50 to $100 more. However, it turns out the 3080 is closer to $500, which changes my options. Should I stick with the 3070 Ti for $300, or is it worth it to spend more on something like the 5070 for $600 instead? I'm leaning towards the 3070 Ti for my first build since I think it'll be enough, but I'm open to advice!

Stick to the 3080; it's a better card overall and gives you more VRAM which is super important these days. Some games just need it, and you don't want to hit that limit.
I'd definitely go for the RTX 3080 if you can swing it! It has 10GB of VRAM compared to the 3070 Ti's 8GB, which is a big deal for future games. You might find that 8GB won't cut it in a couple of years as games get more demanding.
Totally agree! More VRAM is basically future-proofing your rig.
Honestly, the 3080 is better across the board. It's about 10% faster at 1080p and even better at 4K. If you're focusing on performance and can afford it, I'd say go for the 3080!
Seriously! I had a 3080 Ti before switching to a 7900 XTX, and I hit VRAM limits a lot!
