My iPhone was lost in Australia and recently connected to Wi‑Fi in Kenya. I had hoped it might eventually be recovered, but now I'm worried that whoever has it could access my private data. The phone is currently marked as lost in Find My. If I remotely erase it, will all of my information be removed, and will the device still remain locked to my Apple Account? What is the safest way to protect my data without accidentally making the phone usable by someone else?

Keep it in Lost Mode and do not remove it from Find My or your Apple Account. Activation Lock is what prevents someone from setting it up and using it normally. If you erase it remotely, the data should be deleted, but removing the device afterward can allow it to be reused. Make sure your Apple Account password is strong and that the iPhone passcode wasn’t something easy to guess.
If the phone is eventually taken apart, Find My may simply stop receiving location updates rather than showing that it was dismantled. Depending on the model, some replacement parts may also be tied to the original device and have limited usefulness. As long as the passcode and Apple Account credentials haven’t been exposed, the contents should remain protected.
A remote erase is intended to remove your personal data from the phone, but the important part is to leave the device attached to Find My afterward. Don’t follow any message asking you to remove it from your account or enter your credentials. If you’re making an insurance claim, check the insurer’s instructions because they may use a process that wipes the phone while keeping it activation-locked.

Thanks—I’ve already had it marked as lost, so I’ll make sure it stays linked to my account.
