Should I Hand-Code My First Web App or Use AI-Assisted Prototyping?

I have an app idea I'd like to build, but I don't have much coding experience and haven't really made a web app before. For an initial proof of concept, should I learn the fundamentals and build it manually, or use AI coding tools to create a prototype quickly and test whether the idea is worth pursuing?

It depends on your goal. If you mainly want to validate the idea, use AI-assisted coding or another fast prototyping approach so you can get something working quickly. If your goal is to learn web development, hand-code it and use an AI assistant for explanations, debugging, and guidance when you get stuck.

For a proof of concept, thereโ€™s usually little benefit in manually writing every part from scratch. The important thing is to test the core workflow with real users. You can always rebuild or clean up the code later if the idea shows promise.

MellowCedar42: That makes sense. Iโ€™m mostly trying to find out whether the idea is useful before spending months learning everything first.

AI-generated code can help you move fast, but donโ€™t treat it as a replacement for understanding the basics. Start with a small prototype, review what the tools produce, and learn enough about the stack to fix problems and make informed decisions. Hand-coding everything is worthwhile mainly if learning the craft is one of your primary goals.
