Should I Upgrade My CPU or Just My GPU for Gaming?

I'm considering an upgrade for my PC. Right now I have a 6700 XT paired with an Intel i5-12400, and I game at 1440p UWQHD. I'm thinking of getting the RX 9070 XT for my GPU upgrade but I'm curious whether upgrading my CPU would make a noticeable difference. If I go that route, what would be a reasonably priced CPU upgrade? I mostly play single-player games, so I'm not into competitive shooters or anything like that. Hope this details helps!

You might want to see how your current setup performs with the new GPU before deciding on a CPU upgrade. If you find it's holding you back, then upgrading to something like the i5-14600K could be a good choice, especially after a BIOS update for your motherboard. Just make sure to invest in a decent CPU cooler if you're using the stock one.

Honestly, your CPU should be fine as is. If you're focusing on resolution and graphics quality, the GPU will provide the biggest boost. Just keep an eye on CPU usage while you play. If it starts to bottle-neck your games, then you can think about upgrading later. Also, what kind of motherboard do you have? If it’s a low budget one, upgrading might be limited to the i5-14400F.

I recommend getting the RX 9070 XT first! That'll give you the most immediate improvement visually. After that, consider upgrading to the i5-14600K to make sure you’re making the most of your new GPU. Just check your power supply too; you don’t want a budget PSU messing up your expensive new card!
