Tips for Reporting on Hypervisors and Virtual Machines

Hey everyone! I've just stepped into a sysadmin role at my company, and one of my main tasks is to generate a monthly report covering the status of our environment, including metrics on CPU, memory, storage, and network, among other things. We have quite a few resources to manage—45 hypervisors and around 600 VMs. While device metrics flow into Zabbix and we use Grafana for visualization, I'm feeling a bit overwhelmed by the scale of this reporting task. Any advice on how to effectively create these reports?

I personally use Grafana with Alloy for monitoring, and it works well for our mixed environment of VMware and Proxmox. It's been great for us as we're in the process of moving away from VMware. Just something to consider!

You’re in luck! Since you’re using Zabbix and Grafana, there are built-in templates and dashboards that can really simplify your reporting process. Try searching for 'hypervisor-product zabbix grafana dashboard' related to your specific hypervisor—it’ll likely lead you to some useful pre-made resources that you can slightly tweak to fit your needs.

Before you dive into creating reports, clarify the business objective behind them. Are they meant to allocate budget, analyze uptime, or something else? Understanding the goals will help you present your data meaningfully. You likely have all the tools you need—you just have to focus on what's important for your audience.

Make sure to specify what type of hypervisor you’re using, as different tools have their strengths. For example, if you're on VMware, RVTools is a classic choice for reporting and can provide some solid insights on your VMs.

If you want something specifically designed for this type of monitoring, check out Hyper9, which is now known as SolarWinds Virtualization Manager. It might be exactly what you need for generating those reports.

For scheduled reports, you might want to take a look at ManageIQ. I’ve found it very effective for reporting on environments like VMware and Oracle Cloud VMs. It’s free and has powerful reporting capabilities that should serve you well.
