What CPU and GPU Should I Pick for an 8-10 Year Gaming System?

I'm looking to build a new gaming system and would love some guidance on choosing the right CPU and GPU. I want this system to last about 8 to 10 years, during which I plan to upgrade the GPU after about 4-5 years. Currently, I'm gaming on a 1080p monitor and while I probably won't switch to 1440p anytime soon, it's not completely out of the question. My existing setup includes an i5 6600K (bought in 2016) and a GTX 1660 Ti (upgraded in 2020). I'm mainly interested in playing city builders like Anno 1800 and Anno 117, single-player RPGs like Cyberpunk 2077 and the Witcher 4, as well as some co-op titles like Baldur's Gate 3. I'm curious about the importance of VRAM at 1080p, especially considering upcoming titles.

For the GPU, I'm considering the latest options like the RTX 5060 Ti, 5070, RX 7800 XT, RX 9060 XT, or the RX 9070 XT. I know I'll replace the GPU, but I want the CPU to be future-proof, so I'm focusing on AMD options like the Ryzen 7 7700X, 7600X3D, 9700X, and 7800X3D. My main concern is whether those X3D caches really matter and how many cores I'll need for optimal performance, given that future games are more likely to be optimized for 8-core processors like current consoles. Any advice would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

If you're aiming for long-term use, definitely consider going with the Ryzen 7 7800X3D or even the 9800X3D. These CPUs will likely age better over time and handle the increasing demands of future games. Don't skimp on RAM either, especially for those city builders that can have hefty requirements!

Totally agree! A solid CPU like the 7800X3D will give you longevity, especially for gaming at 1080p.
