What does a ticking sound from my hard drive mean?

I've noticed a subtle ticking sound coming from my laptop every couple of seconds when I boot up or exit a game. The sound fades once the game is loaded, and I've only been hearing this for about a month. I suspect the noise is coming from the hard drive. Could this indicate a problem?

If you're hearing a ticking sound from an older hard drive, it might be a sign that it's on its way out. It's crucial to back up your data immediately and consider upgrading to an SSD for better performance. If you're interested, you can use Macrium Reflect to clone your drive before replacing it.

Four years isn't super old for a hard drive, but any ticking sound is worth keeping an eye on. If you have to get really close to hear it, it may not be a total disaster yet, but don’t ignore it. Just keep your important files backed up regularly!
