A strange black circle suddenly appeared on my screen while iTunes was open. It had shifting "eyes" and moved slightly, but it didn't respond to input or show up as a separate app in the taskbar. The only way to make it disappear was to force-close iTunes. I'm worried it might be related to my webcam or a graphics problem. Has anyone seen this before?

This sounds like iTunes’ built-in Music Visualizer. It can display animated shapes and figures over the screen, and it may have been enabled accidentally. Check iTunes’ View or visualizer settings before assuming it’s a driver issue.
It’s probably not the webcam. The fact that force-closing iTunes made it disappear points strongly to an iTunes visual effect or graphical glitch rather than anything accessing the camera.
The webcam crossed my mind because its cover had come off earlier, but thankfully it wasn’t involved.
That was exactly it! I found the visualizer setting and feel a lot less terrified now.
