What to Do About My Cracked iPhone 17 Back Without AppleCare?

Hey everyone! I accidentally dropped my iPhone 17 and now I see that the glass back is shattered. I'm wondering if I can just put a case on it and be okay, or if I really need to take it in for repairs. I'm tight on cash and really don't want to spend over $100 for something that might just be cosmetic. On top of that, I have some health issues that make me a bit clumsy, so I'm worried about dropping it again. I only have the limited warranty coverage, so would that cover the repair cost, and does anyone know what those costs usually look like? Also, is it possible to still upgrade to AppleCare since I missed the 60-day window a few days ago?

Too bad you can't get AppleCare now. Your best bet is to pay for the repair at Apple. I'd avoid any third-party fixes since they can complicate things later on.

Wait, there's glass on the back of the iPhone 17?

Yeah, there is! That's why it's such a bummer when it cracks.

You're likely looking at an out-of-warranty repair cost since the limited warranty won't cover accidental damage. A case might help a bit, but be careful about water since it probably lost its water resistance. I'd recommend checking out the Apple Support app for repair quotes. Just keep in mind, if you drop it again, it could get worse!

Unfortunately, the limited warranty doesn’t cover accidents like this. If you know you’re prone to dropping your phone, consider getting AppleCare next time—it's worth it. If you go with a non-certified repair, it could really hurt your trade-in value down the line. Definitely check with Apple for a repair quote, though!

Typically, repairing the back is cheaper than the front, so getting a quote from Apple is a good idea. Just remember, don’t go through a third party unless you're okay with taking that risk.
