What would you use for a 24/7 video schedule with live switches on AWS?

I’m planning a continuous video channel that plays uploaded videos and switches to live streams at set times, then returns to the scheduled videos. I have some of the scheduling logic in Python already. What AWS pieces would make sense, and what should I watch out for?

Think of this as a few separate jobs rather than one AWS scheduling product. S3 can hold the uploaded videos, MediaLive can handle live video processing, and MediaPackage may be part of delivering the output. You would still need your own logic to decide when to switch sources and what to play next. Lambda or Step Functions could run that coordination, depending on how complex the transitions are.

Work out how live streams enter the system and what should happen if one starts late or ends early before settling on the architecture. Those details affect the switching logic.

If your Python scheduler already works, I wouldn’t rewrite it just because you’re moving to AWS. You may be able to keep the scheduling logic and run it there, then use AWS services for storage or video processing where they solve a real problem. AWS Scheduler can trigger work at particular times, but it doesn’t itself manage continuous video playout or switch the output for you.

Check delivery costs early. A channel running all day can send a lot of data, and outbound transfer costs may become a major part of the bill. A separate CDN could change the economics, but compare the full setup and make sure it fits how you plan to deliver the stream. I’d estimate expected viewers, stream quality, and hours of output before committing to a design.
