I'm planning to build a gaming setup using the Asus TUF Gaming RTX 5070 12GB with the MSI B650 A WiFi motherboard. I'm trying to decide between the Ryzen 7700 for $180 or the Ryzen 9600X for $215. I want to optimize for high FPS at 1080p, especially while running Discord, Metal (a clipping software), and a soundboard. Are there any better CPU options within a similar price range that you would recommend?

The Ryzen 7700 has more cores, which is great for multitasking, while the 9600X is generally newer tech. If your main focus is high FPS in gaming at 1080p, I’d suggest going for the 9600X. It’s likely to give you better overall performance with that GPU.
The 7700 comes with 8 performance cores, making it a solid choice for workstation tasks. On the flip side, the 9600X has 6 high-performance cores, which really boosts gaming. There's also the Intel i5-14600K to consider; it has 6 fast cores for gaming and 4 additional cores for multitasking. Just keep in mind that you'll need a different motherboard for Intel, though they're usually cheaper and offer better flexibility with RAM.
I’d lean towards the 7700 if it comes bundled with a cooler. Both CPUs will work fine with the RTX 5070, but the extra two cores on the 7700 can come in handy when you're juggling multiple applications. I had an 8-core setup for a while and it did wonders before an upgrade.
