I’m trying to choose a Linux distro for a computer with Nvidia graphics. I’d like to use KDE Plasma with Wayland, but I’ve seen reports of driver and login problems, especially with some older cards. Is there a good starting point, or does the answer depend mostly on the GPU model?
Which distro is least hassle with an Nvidia card and KDE Wayland?

Start with the exact GPU model and its driver support, not the distro name. A newer card such as an RTX 3060 is generally a different case from a GTX 10-series card, and older models can have narrower driver options. Check which driver branch supports your card before switching, then pick a distribution that makes installing that driver straightforward.

If you want the least setup work, try a mainstream distro with a graphical Nvidia driver installer, such as Ubuntu or Linux Mint. That keeps driver setup approachable. Still, don’t assume every desktop combination behaves the same: test KDE Wayland specifically, and keep an X11 session available where the distro offers one.

For KDE and newer drivers, Fedora is a reasonable option, but a fresh install failing to start the desktop is not automatically proof that the whole distro is a bad fit. The reports here point to a possible issue with a particular Fedora release and GTX 10-series hardware. Check current release notes and known hardware issues before installing, and have a fallback plan.

Arch-based systems can work well with Nvidia, but you may need to do more troubleshooting yourself when a driver or kernel update changes something. If you’re new to Linux, I’d start with a distribution that handles driver installation for you. You can always experiment with a more hands-on option later.

There isn’t one distro that guarantees a flawless Nvidia Wayland setup. Two machines with different GPU generations can have very different results, and the desktop session matters too. Before committing, try a live environment or a spare installation, confirm the proprietary driver loads, and test the actual KDE Wayland login rather than relying on general claims about Nvidia support.

That makes sense. I’ll check the card’s supported driver branch before choosing.
