Which operating system is best for engineering projects, research, and gaming?

I'm considering switching from Windows to Linux and want an operating system that works well for computer engineering projects such as IoT and AI while still being suitable for gaming. My laptop has an NVIDIA RTX 3050 with 4GB of VRAM, an 11th-generation Intel Core i5-11400H, and 16GB of RAM. I'm interested in hearing which operating systems or Linux distributions people recommend and what their experiences have been.

Arch can work well if you want to configure the system yourself. The package repositories and community-maintained packages cover CUDA, programming tools, and many research workloads, and the installation tools make NVIDIA setup easier than it used to be. That said, it takes more maintenance than Ubuntu or Fedora, so I wouldnโt choose it as a first Linux distribution unless you enjoy troubleshooting.

If you specifically want Linux, Ubuntu or Fedora are solid starting points. They have good support for development tools, AI frameworks, NVIDIA drivers, and general engineering work. Gaming performance is usually similar across mainstream distributions, so hardware support and how comfortable you are with the desktop matter more than small performance differences.

For the broadest compatibility, Windows is probably the safest choice. Many engineering, CAD, and hardware-development tools are still better supported there, and gaming generally requires less setup. If you want Linux too, dual-booting can give you the best of both worlds.

Gaming-focused distributions such as Bazzite are worth considering if gaming is the priority, while Fedora-based options can provide a good balance for development and gaming. Just keep in mind that some anti-cheat systems and certain engineering or CAD applications do not work properly on Linux. Rocky Linux is excellent for server-style research environments, but it may be less convenient as a daily gaming laptop OS.
