Hey everyone! I've got three SSDs to choose from for my new PC setup: the Samsung 980, Samsung 970 EVO Plus, and Crucial E100. I'm trying to figure out which one would be best for running Windows. I want to install games on the second-best option, and then the third one will go into my old PC to either sell or pass on. I've read that these drives are quite similar, but I've also seen some discussions about Crucial having a poor reputation. Plus, there have been some recent issues with Samsung SSDs failing, which has put a bit of a shadow on their reliability. Crucial is reported to be faster, but I've heard the other two have superior components. Any advice would be really appreciated!

Go with the 970 EVO Plus! The firmware issues that caused Samsung drives to fail were addressed with updates, so as long as you keep your firmware updated using Samsung Magician, you should be in the clear. Those failures were mostly on the Gen 4 SSDs. Plus, I’ve had a great experience with my 970!
I’d recommend the 970 EVO Plus since it has DRAM, which is significant for performance. You can use this one for your operating system, and then the others for storage. The Samsung drives generally have better reviews than the Crucial, and there are definitely some reliability concerns with the E100.

If you’re looking to choose, the Samsung 980 and 970 EVO Plus are pretty close in speed, but the 970 has that nice DRAM cache that can make a difference. The E100 just doesn’t stack up well in read/write speeds compared to the Samsung options. I’d definitely lean towards using the 970 for your OS and save the 980 for games. Also, the 980 is actually Gen 3 like the 970, contrary to some info online.
