Why can’t I use my Apple account balance for in-app purchases?

I recently received an Apple gift card and successfully added it to my account balance. However, when I try to purchase an app in the App Store or buy in-game currency, I keep getting the error message: "unavailable for this purchase: Apple account not enabled for in-app payments." My region settings are correct, and my iOS is up to date. Despite having a gift card balance, it seems like I'm unable to use it. Has anyone else experienced this and found a solution?

It looks like you might be trying to use Apple Pay instead of your Apple account balance. Remember, Apple Media Services uses your default payment method, which should be your account balance if you have one. Just make sure the Apple Pay option isn't selected when you're making a purchase.

Have you checked if you're on an Apple Family plan? If you're not the primary account holder, that could cause issues.

Nope, I'm not part of any family plan.

You might want to check this section from Apple Support that explains what can be purchased with your account balance. They usually require another payment method on file in case your account balance doesn’t cover the full cost. Do you have another payment method added?
