I've noticed that Claude Code can compact history automatically, which allows for effectively unlimited length chats. I'm curious about what's preventing similar implementation in Claude Desktop. Anyone know the reason?

I think the context window fills up with previous chats too, which doesn’t help. Sure, you can sort by date and see summaries, but eventually, that context fills up fast! It feels like you’re still hitting a barrier.

Right? I mean, as far as I know, the UI and UX seem to allow for a more seamless experience, it just doesn't seem like it can keep going indefinitely.

I totally get your frustration! It’s such a pain when you're deep into a convo and then boom, hit the message limit. It's like starting all over again. They really should just give a heads-up before that cut-off happens! Would be nice to prepare notes for the next chat instead of losing the flow.

Exactly! If they could warn us ahead of time, at least we could jot things down or pivot before it cuts off.

Yep! Just having that feature added would make such a difference.
