Why did AWS place and reverse a $1 charge on my card?

I noticed a +$1 credit and a -$1 charge from AWS on my credit card. I'm using a free-tier account, haven't changed anything recently, and haven't been actively using the account. Is this a routine payment-method verification, or should I be concerned that someone has accessed my card or AWS account?

Thatโ€™s usually a temporary authorization hold used to verify that the payment method is valid. The charge and reversal can appear as separate $1 transactions, and the hold is normally released automatically. It doesnโ€™t necessarily indicate that your card was compromised.

Some people receive these checks periodically, even when they arenโ€™t actively using their account. If the transaction doesnโ€™t disappear after a few days, appears for more than $1, or you notice unfamiliar activity, review your AWS billing and account activity and contact AWS account support or your card issuer.
