My iPhone 13 Pro behaves normally until the battery reaches around 40%. After that, the percentage falls about 1% every few seconds until the phone shuts off. The phone is only nine months old to me, and its battery health shows 99% maximum capacity. Is there anything I can try to fix this without paying for a battery replacement?

Check whether the phone was sold as new, refurbished, or used, because the purchase date and the battery’s actual age can be different. Also look in Settings for unexpected battery usage and install the latest iOS update. Malware is unlikely to cause this very specific percentage drop, so a battery or calibration fault is the more likely explanation.
That kind of sudden drop usually points to a battery measurement or hardware problem rather than normal battery drain. The phone may be misreporting its remaining charge, even if Battery Health says 99%. Since the device may have been manufactured or used before you bought it, its actual battery age could be greater than nine months. Try updating iOS and restarting it, but if the behavior continues, Apple or an authorized service provider should run diagnostics. If the battery is defective and the phone is still covered, it may qualify for service without paying for a replacement.
A 99% maximum-capacity reading does not guarantee that the battery is working correctly. It only estimates overall capacity and may not detect a faulty cell, a calibration issue, or inaccurate voltage readings. You can try letting the phone shut down from low charge, then charge it uninterrupted to 100% and leave it plugged in for another hour. If it still drops rapidly from around 40%, the battery or power-management hardware likely needs professional testing.
