Should I choose the 7800X3D or the 9700X for my 4K gaming PC?

I'm building a PC with an RX 9070 XT for 4K gaming at a maximum of 144 FPS. I've heard that the 7800X3D is generally better for gaming performance, but since I'm not working full-time and need to manage my budget, I'm wondering if the 9700X would still be a good option given that it's about 80 euros cheaper. What are the differences in performance at 4K, and is the extra cost really worth it?

If your budget allows, consider the 9600X instead. It’s cheaper and has similar single-core performance to the 9700X. For 4K gaming, you likely won't need the extra cores anyway.

At 4K resolution, the performance difference between the CPUs tends to be less significant since you're typically more limited by the GPU. So, you might find that the 9700X is perfectly fine for gaming purposes, especially considering your budget constraints.

That makes sense! Also, if you're upscaling to 4K from lower resolutions, then the CPU might still play a role in performance, especially for smoother gameplay.

Exactly! I’ve noticed in some games, especially those using Unreal Engine, having more cache helps a lot, but for the most part, 4K is mostly GPU work.

Also worth noting that if you tweak the settings and opt for some decent RAM, the 9700X can get pretty close to the 7800X3D’s performance at 4K, making it a solid choice if you're looking to save some bucks.

The 9700X should handle 4K gaming just fine. Most of the load at that resolution will fall on your GPU, making the CPU less critical. Go for it if you're tight on cash!
