Hey folks, I'm in a bit of a pickle with my iPhone 14 Pro Max. The screen is completely unresponsive, but the phone itself still turns on and the buttons work fine. Since it's under warranty, I'm thinking about sending it in for repair. However, the repair center told me to disable Find My iPhone first. When I checked my iCloud, I saw two options: 'Erase This Device' and 'Remove from Account'. I'm really confused about what each choice does and which one I should pick for the repair to go through.
There's another big concern—I've never backed up my data or photos and can't do it now because I can't access my phone! The store I bought it from suggested I might want to go to a local repair shop instead to replace the screen for about $100, back everything up, and then deal with Apple later. But I'm worried that doing this will void the warranty, making a proper fix cost me $500 later on. I'd honestly rather lose the warranty than lose years of precious photos and data. Has anyone faced something similar? Should I just risk it and go the unofficial route to back up my stuff? Any thoughts would be super helpful!

If you want to recover your data, going with a local repair shop might be the best option. Apple really pushes their backup systems, so they might not have a solution for you unless the device is fully operational. Just be aware that this could void your warranty, but it sounds like saving your data is your priority right now.
Totally get your frustration! It does seem odd that a third-party shop could handle something like this easier than Apple, but sometimes that's just how it goes.
