I bought a PC with an ASRock H610M-HVS motherboard two years ago, and I'm wondering if it's good for future upgrades. Should I consider getting a new motherboard instead? When building a PC for future upgrades, what kind of motherboard should I look for?

Your motherboard uses the LGA1700 socket, but unfortunately, that socket has run its course. The fastest CPU you can upgrade to is the 14900KS, but there won't be any new CPUs compatible with your motherboard. So, in short, it’s not the best for future upgrades.

About your question on future upgrades, it might not be ideal for what you have now based on the current CPU. Intel has set a minimum power standard for the LGA1700, so while you can technically run the 14900KS, the motherboard may struggle with power delivery. It would be better to replace both the motherboard and CPU in the future. As for which motherboard to choose, I'd suggest looking into options when you’re ready to upgrade.

If you're looking for true future-proofing, I recommend switching to a B650 motherboard. The motherboard is critical since all components connect to it. You'll need to unplug everything, remove components like the GPU and CPU (and be ready to deal with some thermal paste), and then install the new board. It's a bit of work, but it’ll set you up much better for upgrades down the line.

I understand! My PC was a gift too, and while it’s decent now, I’d want a solid motherboard for my next build so that I can upgrade without having to replace the whole setup.
