Help! My Boss Keeps Assigning New Cases Right Before My Vacation

I've been looking forward to this vacation for over four months, and I've made it clear to my boss and the team that I'll be out of the office starting today. I followed protocol, sent written reminders at the start of the week and again yesterday, and even had a verbal reminder during our meeting. My out-of-office notice is clearly marked on my calendar.

Despite all of this, my boss keeps assigning me new high-priority cases, some requiring travel and immediate attention. I worry that when I return, I'll face questions about why these cases weren't managed when I've made it clear I won't be available. Am I overreacting, or should I really have to repeat myself while dealing with grown adults?

Talk to your manager about which tickets are priorities for you to handle before you leave. If he insists on assigning new cases, inform him you’ll work on them when you return. It’s best to have clarity before heading off.

Sounds like a solid plan, unless he tries to push back.

Yep, just keep it professional and clear from the start.

Why not directly ask your boss why he's assigning you tasks right before you leave? Be straightforward and let him know which tickets will require more time and how that conflicts with your vacation. It might clear the air and he could provide a solution.

That sounds like a good approach instead of just venting here.

True, but he's probably just reacting without thinking. You should remind him about your PTO.

You should absolutely reassign those tickets back to your boss and remind him that you've got PTO. It's his responsibility to manage assignments while you're out. If he throws something at you last minute, definitely don't take it on.

Don’t even bother assigning them back. Just let them sit until you return.

Absolutely! Delegate upwards! It's not your problem anymore.

Honestly, sounds like your boss is the one at fault here. You’ve notified him multiple times about your time off. Just let those tickets go and enjoy your vacation without stress!

Exactly! It’s on him if he doesn't communicate properly.

Right? You deserve your time off without being accountable for new cases.

Just reassign those tickets, no big deal. It's a standard procedure.
