I'm looking for recommendations on self-service password reset tools for Active Directory. Ideally, I'd like a solution that allows users to change their passwords even if they don't currently know their existing passwords. I'm thinking something that involves the help desk verifying their identity and providing an activation code or a similar mechanism would be ideal. Anyone have experience with solutions like this?

I recently tried a tool called Fastpass. It lets users reset their passwords right from the login screen and offers support for mobile workers and dual-factor authentication. Plus, if needed, help desk operators can assist with the process. You should check it out!
I used PortalGuard by Bio-Key for password resets, but it's more of a single sign-on solution too. It covers more ground if that's something you're considering. Just throwing it out there!
I recommend checking out Manage Engine AD Self Service. It allows for multi-factor authentication and can reset passwords easily. While I have my doubts about it, it might fit your needs, along with other similar tools out there.
Just a heads up about Entra SSPR—it doesn't support external multi-factor authentication from third parties as of now. There might have been updates, so checking the latest documentation could be worthwhile.
Have you looked into Microsoft Entra SSPR? It seems to work pretty well for most people. Just make sure your environment is set up to sync with it.
